With all of the German Shepherd training videos floating around YouTube, it’s hard to figure out which ones are actually worth watching.
After all, you want to make sure you choose something that aligns with your own preferred training strategies, right?
Below, we’ll go over some of my favorite picks for everything from basic commands to stopping unwanted behaviors.
Let’s take a look!
7 Helpful German Shepherd Training Videos
Training German Shepherds can sometimes be a challenging and frustrating process.
It often leads to owners looking for outside help during these training exercises.
One popular method is using online training videos, which detail how specific tasks are done correctly.
But finding useful ones isn’t always easy as there’s a lot of them out there.
I intend to help mitigate this issue by showing seven of my favorite GSD training videos.
1. 5 Training Tips For German Shepherd Puppies
This first video is a rather short and basic one about how owners should approach these sessions.
It’ll provide useful tips about what tends to produce the best results when teaching commands to GSD puppies.
After all, first-time owners tend to make many mistakes with their dogs in the early training stages.
You want to avoid them as much as possible, which is where a simple video like this one can be a valuable resource.
It’ll offer a foundation for ways to conduct yourself before trying more complicated training exercises.
Honestly, a video like this one would’ve saved me a lot of time when training my dogs. It took me much longer than it should’ve to teach them simple commands, such as sit and stay.

2. How to Train a German Shepherd Puppy
The next video is a tad longer and looks more in-depth into several aspects of your GSD puppy’s training.
These aspects include discussing when training should start, basic commands training, potty training, crate training, leash training, and how to deal with biting issues.
I should warn you, this video uses a monotone robot voice to deliver its information, which can be grating after a while.
However, it’s worth sitting through because every topic is covered in great detail to ensure you what you’re doing.
You aren’t going to find many other training videos capable of matching the content offered by this one.
3. How to Housebreak and Potty Train your German Shepherd Puppy
A step-by-step instruction video about how to use a crate for successfully housebreak a GSD puppy.
This method has proven to be an effective method that should cut down potty training by a significant margin.
I’m willing to guess any puppy owner would find this information more than helpful.
It might be the very thing capable of saving your carpet from another puppy accident.
The narrator’s also engaging and doesn’t overlook any question that could present itself during this process.
It makes for a fun, informative video, which should be endlessly helpful in potty training your pupper.
4. How to Train German Shepherd to Sit and Stay
Teaching a German Shepherd how to sit and stay isn’t always easy.
These dogs tend to get distracted by outside influences more than other breeds, making teaching basic commands tedious.
You’ll learn how to deal with these distractions and tips about gaining their focus from this video by Tony Grammer.
It’ll offer the necessary tools to ensure your dog ends up master at sitting and staying.
This particular command is essential because it makes doing various exercises much more manageable.
For instance, if you spill something inside your home, this technique can provide enough time to procure your vacuum and stop them from eating/licking it.
It could also help deal with specific stressors your dog might encounter in nature.
If a stray cat comes across your dog on a walk, you can use this command to keep them from running towards it.
5. How to Stop a German Shepherd from Pulling on the Leash
As with any breed, untrained German Shepherds love to pull on their leashes during walks.
It can represent a huge safety issue as GSDs are rather large and can pull some owners around like rag dolls.
This video will show how using positive reinforcement can stop leash pulling issues with certain steps.
In fact, the narrator walks you through the entire process and describes each stage in great detail.
I was thrilled to see this video use an untrained dog, as well.
Most of these videos use trained dogs to showcase the process, which isn’t very helpful to a first-time owner.
But this one allows someone to see how the corrections work and the training’s overall impact on this beautiful German Shepherd in real-time.
6. How I Taught My German Shepherd Dogs to Speak
This video walks the watcher through a method of getting their GSD to bark on command.
I was impressed by how personable and clear the narrator was during this entire process.
These qualities don’t often come with the people who make these videos.
But how does this trick benefit an owner? Well, barking on command can be used to ward off any potential intruders.
People are much less likely to enter your home when they can hear a dog barking.
As a result, it becomes a safety measure to ensure you can avoid a dangerous situation.
It’s also a cute trick to show friends or family members when they meet your dog.
7. How to Teach Your Dog to Roll Over
Dog owners have been teaching their pups to roll over for as long as anyone can remember.
This video will showcase a method of teaching “roll over” using a device called a clicker.
Honestly, the roll over command doesn’t have many practical uses for a dog owner.
But it does offer another bonding experience between you and your favorite pupper.
Teaching the command will deepen your bond and further develop a sense of respect.
Plus, it doesn’t hurt that a German Shepherd who’s rolling over is one of the cutest things on Earth.
I hope these videos end up helping you when training your German Shepherd.
