What to Put in a Dog Crate (and What NOT to Include)

Just like you wouldn’t chuck your infant in an empty locked room and call it a day, you can’t put a dog in a crate without first making sure it has everything he needs.

SpotOn Dog Collar Review with Coupon

Let’s start with what to put in your pup’s crate, then we’ll talk about a couple of things to leave out.

FYI, this post contains affiliate links. If you make a purchase through these links, we earn a small commission at no extra charge to you.

What to put in the crate

As you set up your dog’s crate, consider both his safety and his comfort. Our goal is to create a happy doggy den, not a cage.

At the very least, you’ll want:

  • Water
  • Comfortable bedding
  • Something to occupy your dog.

Depending on how long Fido will be staying in his crate, you may also need to feed him in there.

However, if you’re just crating him up while you run to the store, it’s not really necessary.

We’ll talk more about water bottles below, so let’s quickly touch on the other two items on that short list.

Comfortable bedding

While dogs have a lot more tolerance when it comes to sleeping on hard surfaces than we humans do, most still prefer to cozy up in some comfy bedding.

If you’re thinking about just tossing a soft blanket in the crate, though, don’t. Blankets are easily chewed, for one thing.

For another, they can be downright dangerous if your pup manages to get wrapped up in it the wrong way.

You’re MUCH better off buying a good crate pad. Take a look at a few of my favorites on the table below.

As PreventativeVet reminds us, remember that whatever you put in a puppy crate can (and will) be chewed!

So, you’ll either want to opt for a chew-proof mat (which are almost impossible to find) or leave it out until your pup stops chewing everything in sight.

Entertainment

Again, would you want to sit in an empty room for hours on end with nothing to do? Neither would your dog!

Make sure you include some fun toys, like interactive puzzles!

Kong toys are another good pick. They’re strong enough to withstand puppy teeth, so you don’t have to worry so much about pieces breaking off.

Now that we know what to include in the crate, let’s go over some things to leave out.

What NOT to put in the crate

What should you leave out of the crate? Pretty much everything else!

Most things are common sense, but here are a few that may be surprising.

  • Food, unless you’ll be gone past feeding time (treats in a puzzle toy are okay, though)
  • Water bowls (which is why we’re talking about bottles below)
  • Toys that are easily chewed or shredded
  • Blankets large enough to get wrapped around your dog’s neck
  • A dog collar (take it off before you put Fido in!)

Really, though, just use common sense. Ask yourself, “Can this feasibly cause my dog harm?” If the answer is yes, it doesn’t belong in the crate.

Okay, now that we’ve covered the basics, let’s talk about the best dog crate water bottles.

Best Dog Crate Water Bottles

Looking for the best dog crate water bottles? Wondering what else to put in a crate? Check out the answers to both!

In my opinion, a good dog crate water bottle is the single most important thing to put in a crate. Remember, all living things need hydration!

So, lets take a look at my top picks. Use the table for a quick peek, then read on for more details.

1. Choco Nose H590 Patented No Drip Dog Water Bottle

Choco Nose H590 Patented No Drip Dog Water Bottle.

As far as dog crate water bottles go, Choco Nose seems to be the best of the batch.

Most 4-star water bottles only have a handful of reviews, but this one hit the mark with just under 400 ratings.

Let’s take a look at features, pros and cons.

Features

  • Patented leak-proof nozzle
  • No drip
  • BPA-free
  • Holds 11.2oz
  • Recommended for small to medium dogs
  • U.S Patented Leak-proof nozzle/ No Drip Dog Water Bottle/ BPA Free/ Mess Free/ 11.2 oz Capacity.
  • Easy to use
  • Nozzle fits onto a standard soda bottle

Pros & Cons

PROS
Multiple colors
Affordable
Replace with soda bottle
Easy to use
CONS
Clip isn’t durable
Drips after a few months

Recommendation

I love that you can replace their bottle with a regular soda bottle.

Eventually, their bottle will get grungy. It happens, even with the best water bottles.

At least you don’t have to buy a whole new one when that happens.

The clip isn’t the best, and after a few months it probably will start to leak.

However, leakage is an issue with literally every single water bottle I’ve ever used (we have guinea pigs, so I’ve used a lot).

Not even our glass bottles remained leak-free for more than a few months.

Out of all the dog crate water bottles, this is the one I’d most highly recommend.

2. Poodle Pet Water Feeder Bottle

Poodle Pet Water Feeder Bottle

If you need a good water bottle for your smaller dog’s crate, Poodle Pet has fantastic reviews overall.

Features

  • Easy to mount on the crate thanks to turnable fixer wheel.
  • Easy to fill, just flip, remove cap, and fill.
  • Gravity-based water bottle that’s made to be drip-free
  • Holds 12 oz of water

Pros & Cons

PROS
Affordable
Easy to use
Drip-free
CONS
Only works with their bottle size
Puppy could remove cap

Recommendation

The scariest complaint about this one is the fact that a puppy could chew off the cap, then choke on the roller ball inside.

Honestly, though, this is a potential issue with most dog crate water bottles, as pretty much all of them use that roller ball.

You’ll want to pay attention and make sure your pup shows no interest in gnawing on it before leaving him alone.

Most users really like it and say that it doesn’t leak nearly as easily as other brands.

I do think it’s best for a small dog, though. The nozzle is a bit too tiny for larger guys (which can actually cause that choking hazard).

3. Dripless Pet Drinking Fountains

Dripless Pet Drinking Fountains

While it doesn’t have many ratings overall, this one looks promising.

Features

  • Promises to be virtually “dripless”
  • Plastic bottle hangs outside the crate.
  • Dual-use design makes it great for travel and home use.
  • Super lightweight.
  • Non-toxic plastic.

Pros & Cons

Pros
Dual-use
Multiple colors
Inexpensive
CONS
No free shipping
Takes long time to arrive

Recommendation

The biggest issue with this one is the shipping. First, it costs almost as much as the bottle itself.

Second, it ships from overseas and take a while to arrive. Factor in the current crisis and that wait time can double.

While very few people reviewed it so far, the two that did said it works great.

Is it my favorite? No (well, aside from colors). However, it’s a good back-up dog crate water bottle.

4. COCOPET Dripless Pet Drinking Fountains

Petmate Ultra Vari Kennel

COCOPET’s water bottle only scored 3.5 stars, but it earned that with over 320 ratings.

That makes it potentially better than options that score 4 stars across just a handful of ratings, at least in my book.

Features

  • Another one that promises to be virtually “drip-free.”
  • Easy to set up, thanks to the 4-stage regulating feature.
  • Holds just over 13.5 oz.
  • BPA FREE and Stainless Steel ball
  • 100% money back satisfaction guarantee

Pros & Cons

PROS
Holds more than other bottles
Easy to set up
Money-back guarantee
CONS
Ball get stuck
Not for big dogs

Recommendation

While this one holds more than the others, it’s not designed for large dogs at all according to some customers.

Others complain that the roller ball sticks and blocks the water.

Since it comes with a money-back guarantee, though, you really have nothing to lose by trying it out.

COCOPET Dripless Pet Drinking Fountains No Drip Dog Water Bottle Dispenser Kettle with Automatically Feeding Water 400ml Red
  • NO DRIP: This is a virtually "dripless" water dispenser that keeps the crate dry but the pooch hydrated all day while you are at work

  • SAFTY AND DURABLE: BPA FREE and Stainless Steel ball and mouth part on Pipe section , not rusting, ensure their healthy body

  • TRUST THE SERVICES OF COCOPET:If it leaks, just adjust the black seal ring in the nozzle! Along with the 100% money back satisfaction guarantee you have every good reason to give it a try

5.  Lixit Glass Tube Water Bottle

Lixit Glass Tube Water Bottle

If you prefer to go with a more eco-friendly dog crate water bottle, glass is the best choice.

Lixit is one of the few brands that makes glass water bottles large enough for a dog.

Features

  • Comes in multiple sizes, both in terms of nozzle and water volume.
  • Easy to install, attaches with mounting hardware.
  • Also easy to remove for quick refills.
  • Keeps water fresher.
  • Touch ball design.
  • Made with non-toxic glass, stainless steel, and USDA-approved rubber stopper.

Pros & Cons

PROS
Multiple sizes
Eco-friendly
Easy to use
Durable
CONS
Best for small dogs
Not drip-proof
Expensive

Recommendation

First, let’s talk about that “not drip proof” con, because it’s actually kind of a pro, too.

Lixit comes right out and says “some leaking is normal.” They’re not trying to hide it, which I appreciate.

The main issue is size, it’s really only ideal for smaller dogs. Plus, it’s pricey.

Still, if you have a chihuahua or shih tzu and want to avoid plastic, this is your best bet.

Sale
Lixit Heavy Duty Deluxe Glass Water Bottles for Birds, Dogs and Small Animals. (32oz Large Tube)
  • LARGE NOZZLE SIZE: The Large Tube measuring 5/8" is designed for large parrots, African Greys, Macaws, and Cockatoos

  • EASY INSTALL: This bottle easily attaches to wire cages with mounting hardware, and it's quick to remove for refilling and cleaning
  • THE SAFE CHOICE: Lixit's Glass Water Bottle is made with a stainless steel drinking tube and a non-toxic, USDA approved rubber stopper
  • MESS-PROOF: Lixit's Glass Tube Water Bottle keeps water fresh and clean from debris and won't be knocked over like other water dishes

Final Recommendation

Out of all the dog crate water bottles, the first one by Choco Nose really appears to be the best option.

It scores 4 stars with plenty of ratings to back it up. The others make good back-up options, though.

If you want glass, Lixit is pretty much the only viable option that I could find.
