Today we’re going to dive into the best crates for puppy training!

What makes this different from the other breed-specific crate recommendations, you ask?

Well, up until this point, we’ve mostly just recommended buying a full-size crate for the adult dog your puppy will become.

Today, though, we’ll focus on another side of that- the benefits of a puppy-sized crate, especially for dogs with separation anxiety.

Today we're going to dive into the best crates for puppy training! Check out our top five favorites (including crates for separation anxiety),

When is a puppy crate the right choice?

When we talked about the best crates for German Shepherd puppies I told you that you can usually get away with just getting an adult-sized crate.

I repeated that advice when we looked at Husky crates, and again when we talked about pit bull options.

So, why am I changing my tune now? Well, I’m not. At least not entirely.

If you have a tiny budget and a fast-growing puppy who’s pretty eager to learn and doesn’t freak out when you leave, then an adult crate is the best option.

However, if you have an anxious breed, then you’ll want the best dog crate for separation anxiety.

In the case of puppies, that’s often a smaller and “homier” option that gives them an extra sense of security.

You’ll still need to think ahead a bit, though, and buy a crate for that your pup won’t outgrow in days.

So, let’s talk about how to choose the right size puppy crate. Then, we’ll get into specifics.

How to choose the right size puppy crate

Today we're going to dive into the best crates for puppy training! Check out our top five favorites (including crates for separation anxiety),

Unfortunately, there’s really no easy answer to this question.

After all, the right size crate for a dachshund puppy is, obviously, not the right size for a Great Dane pup.

So, I recommend you start by getting to know your breed. Learn how fast they grow and their average weight & measurements at different ages.

As the AKC explains, larger breeds grow slower and longer than small breeds. Some dogs can keep growing up until 18+ months of age.

The Happy Puppy Site also has a handy puppy growth chart that will help guide you.

If you take a look at 2 months, then 4 months, most dogs put on about 20 lbs (and grow in about the same proportion).

From 4 to six months, their size increases by about 40-45%, if I’m doing my math right.

Now, you can buy a new crate every two months if you want. Your money, your choice.

Personally, I would buy one that would hold my dog up to her 6-month weight (since we usually don’t even get our pups until they are around 2-3 months old).

Then, I’d move on to an adult crate once she hits the 6-month mark. To me, that makes the most financial sense.

What else to look for in a puppy crate?

Along with choosing a size that will work for your pup at 2,4, and 6 months, you’ll want to consider other features.

Most are obvious, but I’ll list them out anyway.

  • Opt for chew-proof materials, obviously.
  • Look for rounded edges versus hard (or worse, sharp) corners.
  • Choose crates with secure latches (preferably more than one)
  • Get something with multiple access points, like two doors or a lid that opens.
  • Make sure it has a removable pan on the bottom. While pups typically avoid going in their crate, accidents happen.
  • Get something that’s easy to clean!

You may also want to consider a crate with dividers, as even a puppy crate can be too big at first.

Now that we know what to look for, let’s check out my top 5 picks.

Top 5 Best Crates for Puppy Training

You’ll notice at least a few crates that we’ve looked at before.

There’s a reason for that. Regardless of which size you buy, they’re still the best options.

In the case of crates for puppy training, though, we’ll be looking at some of their smaller models.

1. AMAZONBASICS DOUBLE DOOR DOG CRATE

AMAZONBASICS DOUBLE DOOR DOG CRATE

AmazonBasics is always at the top of my list for the best dog crates, including the best ones for puppies.

While it’s a store brand, like all of Amazon’s own products it’s actually as good or better than name brands.

Features

  • Double doors for front and side entry.
  • Two slide bolt latches.
  • Folds flat for storage.
  • Comes with mini dividers on bottom to keep puppy paws from slipping through.
  • Includes a divider panel to make the crate smaller.
  • 6 different sizes from 22-48″

Pros & Cons

PROS
Multiple sizes
Affordable
Sturdy metal
Open design
CONS
Not escape-proof
Hard to assemble
No extras

Recommendation

If you need a simple and affordable crate that for a fairly mellow puppy, you can’t go wrong here.

While it’s not escape-proof for a super determined dog, nothing truly is. I’ve read reviews about dogs escaping from the Fort Knox of cages.

It’s one of the best crates for dogs with separation anxiety simple because it’s so wide open.

Your pup can see all around him (and see you where you go in the room).

On the other hand, if your puppy has people anxiety and needs a little “me time” to get away from all the craziness, you may want to put a cover around three sides.

2. MIDWEST HOMES ICRATE DOG CRATE STARTER KIT

Midwest Homes iCrate Dog Crate Starter Kit

The Midwest iCrate Starter Kit isn’t much different from the AmazonBasics, with one exception. It comes with a few nice extras.

Features

  • 2-door iCrate comes with a bed, cover, and 2 bowls
  • Bowls affix to the crate
  • Soft fleece bed and cover are machine-washable.
  • 1-Year Manufacturer’s Warranty on all products
  • Comes with divider panel
  • Most sizes include a carrying handle
  • Leak-proof removable tray
  • 6 sizes from 22-48″

Pros & Cons

PROS
Multiple sizes
3 colors
Bowls included
Affordable
CONS
Not escape-proof
Bed not durable
Doors aren’t removable
Cover not waterproof

Recommendation

Keep in mind that starter kit means just that- a kit with essentials to get you started.

For adult dogs, most of the items aren’t really all that great. The bed isn’t thick enough, the bowls are too small.

If you have a puppy, though, while the bed will still end up shredded, the bowls and cover are nice extras.

The thing I like about the cover- when puppy needs privacy, you can pop it on. When he needs to see you, take it off.

3. MERRY PET 2-IN-1 CONFIGURABLE PET CRATE AND GATE

MERRY PET 2-IN-1 CONFIGURABLE PET CRATE AND GATE

The Merry Pet 2-in-1 is a bit different than the first two, as it looks more like furniture than a crate.

However, that’s not what really makes it unique. Keep reading to find out what does.

Features

  • Solid wood veneer cover
  • Converts into a gate!
  • Top and bottom separate
  • Removable plastic tray
  • Easy to assemble
  •  32.5L x 23.5W x 22.5H in

Pros & Cons

Pros
Turns into a gate
Doubles as a table
Looks nice
CONS
Not escape proof
Only one size
Not chew-proof

Recommendation

Want something that you can use in a small apartment as both a table and a crate?

This is a great choice.

I love that it easily turns into a gate, as I often have more use for that than I do a crate (oh, the rhyming is killing me here).

However, keep in mind that this is a “train your pup to like a crate while you’re still close by” option.

It’s not a “leave puppy home alone” crate, as the top doesn’t really stay secure.

Merry Pet 2-in-1 Configurable Pet Crate and Gate, Medium
  • Wooden pet crate is convertible into a gate
  • Removable plastic tray
  • Easy to assemble
  • Dimensions: 22. 48" D x 32. 48" W x 23. 35" H
  • Interior dimensions: 19. 09" D x 29. 53" W x 22. 83" H

4. PETMATE ULTRA VARI KENNEL

Petmate Ultra Vari Kennel

For puppies with separation anxiety that need to go everywhere with you, you’ll want a good travel crate.

While the Petmate isn’t my top “lounging around at home” model, it is among my favorite “on the go” crates.

Features

  • Designed for dog air travel, but great for car rides, too.
  • Holds dogs up to 50 lbs.
  • Meets most airline specifications.
  • Made with heavy duty recycled plastic material
  • Features wire vents on two sides

Pros & Cons

PROS
Airline-approved
Great ventilation
Easy assembly
Easy to open for you
CONS
No handle
No food bowls
Not chew-proof

Recommendation

As I said, this is a travel crate, so it shouldn’t be used as your pup’s main crate.

However, part of puppy training is getting him used to going for rides in the car, so it’s definitely something to consider.

While I don’t like those holes in the back (pups can chew through the plastic), I do like the all-around ventilation.

Plus, it’s easy to put together on your own and easy to open up.

The drawback? If you can easily open it, so can a super smart puppy! Don’t forget to check our detailed Petmate Vari Kennel review

Petmate Ultra Vari Dog Kennel for Medium Dogs (Durable, Heavy Duty Dog Travel Crate, Made with Recycled Materials, 32 in. Long) 30 to 50 lbs

5.  LOVUPET WOODEN PORTABLE FOLDABLE PET CRATE

LOVUPET WOODEN PORTABLE FOLDABLE PET CRATE

Another super unique option, this one doubles as a table, but that’s not what makes it truly unique. Let’s see why it’s so great.

Features

  • Folding crate that requires zero assemble. Just unfold and go!
  • Made with eco-friendly solid fir wood and non-toxic finish
  • Also a table
  • Two places for the tray (on the floor of the crate or below it)
  • Top opens for easy cleaning
  • Holds dogs up to 45 lbs

Pros & Cons

PROS
Multiple sizes
Doubles as a table
Eco-friendly
Portable
CONS
Only one size
Not escape-proof
Only open on one side

Recommendation

Like the table-style crate in #3, this is definitely a “use while you’re home” crate.

It’s not ideal for dogs who need to see all around them, because it’s only really open on one side.

However, if you prefer an eco-friendly option that fits well into a small apartment, it’s a brilliant choice.

Plus, once your pup outgrows it, you can keep using the table and use the “guts” for storage or a book shelf.

MCombo Wooden Dog Crate Furniture End Table with Door, No Assembly Portable Foldable Pet Crate Dog Kennel Indoor with Removable Tray 0651 (Small, Brown)
  • No Assembly Needed: After you remove the end table dog kennel from the box, you just need to put two locks on, this dog cage is done.
  • Portable Design: The dog crate could be easily folded to move anywhere you like.
  • Combining Function and Style: This dog kennel could also use as an elegant side table, end table, and nightstand, furniture-style design gives this pet crate a native feel.
  • All Locks Updated: This dog crate furniture's all locks have been updated to make it no longer easy for the puppy to escape the crate.
  • Security Updates: The distance between pet kennel bars has been reduced from 2" to 1.2" to prevent the puppy from getting stuck.

Final Recommendation

Personally, I prefer the first two options. They’re as close to a standard crate for puppy training as you can get, and they’re affordable.

That said, I do love #3 and 5 because I never seem to have enough space in this house. Both have unique features that make them a good pick.
