What is the best leash for a Husky?

Well, obviously that would be whatever one keeps him from escaping your grasp and running away!

Huskies are major Houdini dogs, as I’m sure I don’t have to tell you!

Below, we’ll go over some types of leashes that would work, then look at specific product recommendations.

What is the best leash for a Husky? The one that keeps him from running away, obviously! Jokes aside, check out our top 5 picks!

Types of leashes (and which ones are best for Huskies)

While there are many different types of leashes, not all of them are ideal for Huskies.

Let’s start by going over the major types.

SpotOn Dog Collar Review with Coupon

For each, I’ll let you know whether it’s a good option for your little escape artist.

I’ll also share videos about each, but just to be clear, they’re only to show you an example of the leash.

In other words, I don’t necessarily agree with the content, nor do I endorse any products shown in them.

What is the best leash for a Husky? The one that keeps him from running away, obviously! Jokes aside, check out our top 5 picks!

1. Standard Leash

This is the one that probably comes to your mind when you hear the word “leash.”

It’s a fairly standard model that comes with:

  • A clip on one end to attach to your Husky’s collar or harness
  • A loop on the other to hold onto
  • About 4-8 feet of lightweight nylon material in the middle

That’s about it. Like I said, fairly basic.

Is it good for Huskies?

Since it’s not the strongest leash, it’s not among my top picks for Huskies.

While it may be okay for indoor training, I wouldn’t use it outdoors at all.

I’ve had dogs that weren’t even half as determined as a Husky manage to break free of them.

Also, they give you very little control over your dog, so you could easily end up getting dragged down the street.

Been there, done that, got the road rash scars to prove it!

PS- DO NOT wrap the loop around your hand or forearm. My dog almost broke my wrist once because I did that.

Learn from my mistakes, my friends. The video below gives you a good idea of what these look like.

2. Slip Leashes

Slip leashes are braided leashes that work pretty much like a slip knot.

Doggie Designer does a better job of explaining what this means. They write,

A slip lead employs the same process as a slip knot. Unlike the other leashes on this list, a slip lead does not require a collar. Instead, the leash loops onto itself, and that loop is placed around your dog’s neck for an easy-on, easy-off placement.

Is it good for Huskies?

In my opinion, slip leashes aren’t good for ANY dog, period.

The ONLY time we’ve ever used them is when we adopted my boy Cooper and we didn’t have a leash with us.

The animal shelter gave us one to use to get him into the car and out again at home.

After that, we tossed it in a drawer and left it there for the entire 10 years of his life.

I just feel like they’re too dangerous to be truly useful. As Whole Dog Journal explains,

[Slip leashes] have some potential to choke and cause trachea damage if a dog pulls hard and persistently, or if the handler jerks on them, in a way that they were not intended to be used.

3. Chain Leashes

First, it’s important to note that when I say “chain leash,” I mean one that’s shaped more or less like a standard leash, but made of chain material.

I’m not talking about those wretched slip-leash choke-collar style leads.

Anything that purposely chokes your dog can also damage his trachea, which is just one of the reasons I avoid them.

The other being that they’re not part of my positive reinforcement training strategy.

The video below is a fairly good example of what I’m talking about.

Is it good for Huskies?

Healthy Paws Pet Insurance says,

The metal links are resistant to chewing, and the leash is heavy enough to slow down some dogs. It’s also very hard to snap or break a metal dog leash, so this is a great option for large, strong dogs.

I tend to agree. As long as you’re using a good (and humane) collar or harness, they can be a great option.

Just make sure you actually buy a leash with a strong leather-like handle (doesn’t have to be real leather).

Don’t just slap a clip on a regular chain and call it a day.

4. Retractable Leashes

Dogtime’s definition of a retractable leash is perfect, I couldn’t possibly say it better. Here’s what they say:

A retractable leash is often a thin length of cord wrapped around a spring-loaded device housed inside a plastic handle that fits comfortably in a human hand.

Did you catch the part about the THIN length of cord? That’s pretty important as we go into whether they’re good for Huskies.

Is it good for Huskies?

There’s a raging debate among owners & trainers regarding whether retractable leashes are good for ANY dog, let alone Huskies.

In fact, that Dogtime quote that I shared a minute ago comes from a post titled “Retractable Leashes: Dangerous And Deadly For Dogs And Humans.”

They’re not alone in that harsh opinion.

A Facebook friend of mine does Search and Rescue, and she shared a post with tips for first-time dog owners.

The post was written by the Director of The Retrievers, a Volunteer Lost Dog Team. They wrote,

No retractable leashes. Ever. You fall and drop the leash, and your dog will be in the next county before you know it. Or he’ll be wrapped around a tree in the woods somewhere, and if he’s tangled up really badly and can’t reach his leash to chew through it, he’ll freeze to death in hours. So just don’t.

The Animal Welfare Society also shared a lengthier explanation on why they’re a bad idea.

I’ll leave that below for you to check out. I think you get the point though. Retractable leashes are a no-no.

Say NO to Retractable Leashes People often choose them thinking they will give their dogs extra freedom to sniff and…

5.Heavy-Duty Training Leash

This last one is the same style as a standard leash as far as shape goes, but it’s made from much stronger material.

Most use heavy-duty nylon (versus the lightweight stuff in a standard leash), and some even reinforce it with chain material.

Is it good for Huskies?

Yes, absolutely. These- along with the chain-style leashes-are really the only two that I like for Huskies.

They’re super strong, so your Husky can’t snap them easily.

At the same time, they’re fairly comfortable to hold, especially if you get one with a padded handle.

Let’s quickly talk go over a couple of common questions that I hear regarding Husky leashes. Then we’ll look at my top picks.

How to correctly measure a dog for a leash

What is the best leash for a Husky? The one that keeps him from running away, obviously! Jokes aside, check out our top 5 picks!

Leashes aren’t like collars and harnesses; you don’t have to follow a special formula to find the right measurement.

In fact, you don’t really have to measure your dog at all.

Instead, think about how much “range” you want to give your Husky.

If you’re just starting out with training, grab a shorter leash that keeps him closer to your body.

That way, you have more control over his movements.

If you have a well-trained dog and/or want to give him a bit more freedom to explore, the go with a longer option.

Rough Grip recommends 3-6 feet for everyday walking.

Where to store your leash

A friend asked me, “where should I store my leash.”

Honestly, I just throw mine either on a hook in my closet or, if I’m being lazy, on my table.

If you want to get fancy, you can always grab one of those nifty entry-way shelves that hold keys, coats, and such, like this one.

leash holder

Really, though, store it wherever is most convenient for you.

Now, let’s move on to my top five picks, shall we?

We’ve already covered the basic features and pros to most of these leashes when talking about the styles.

So, I’ll go over what I like about each one specifically and try to “long story short” things a bit for you.

Basically, I’ll tell you what I want to know when shopping.

1. SparklyPets Heavy Duty Rope Bungee Leash

Don’t let the cutesy name scare you away, this is one tough leash!

It’s highly rated on Amazon, and given the features, I can see why.

Features & Pros

  • Designed for strong dogs.
  • 5-year guarantee, if you don’t love it, they’ll give you your money back.
  • Features an elastic bungee to “offset the pulling.”

  • Super affordable.
  • Three fun colors.

Customers rave about this leash, with most pointing out the bungee feature.

One reviewer said that it really helps absorb the shock of your dog suddenly darting after something.

Another pointed out that it’s half the price of similar leashes yet works twice as well!

Cons

With only 2% of 2,800+ customers giving it a one star, there aren’t many cons.

The most common complaints were:

  • Bungee portion doesn’t last as long as the rest of the leash.
  • It’s not completely chew-proof.
  • Handle isn’t the most comfortable.

Recommendation

Given the very small number of complaints and the overwhelming praise, I feel confident in recommending this option.

It’s very affordable for those of us on a tight budget, and the warranty is fantastic!

2. iYoShop 6 FT Strong Dog Leash

This one has a solid 5-star rating with over 5,400 reviews, so that should definitely tell you something!

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a 5-star rating!

Well, maybe for a product with a handful of shady “no really, these aren’t my friends” reviews, but never with 5K + rating!

Let’s see what makes it so special!

Features & Pros

  • 6′ long model handles dogs up to 150 lbs.
  • Made of high density nylon rope.
  • Very durable metal clasp
  • Comfortable padded handle designed for pullers.
  • Reflective threading for nighttime walks.
  • 60-Day 100% Money-Back Guarantee
  • Affordable.

Testimonials

Customers love the padded handles, saying that they’re incredible comfortable.

One user exclaimed that she LOVES this leash, saying that it’s the most comfortable one she’s ever owned.

Others talked about how perfect it is for their large breed dogs who happen to be major pullers.

Cons

Out of 5K+ ratings, only 1% are 1-star. The most common complaints include:

  • Fraying of the leash.
  • Defective (frozen) swivel clasp.
  • NOT chew-proof

Recommendation & Buying Advice

Honestly, nothing except chain material (and #5 on this list) is totally chew proof.

So, if that’s something you really need, then no, this isn’t for you.

However, if your dog doesn’t try to eat his leash and you want something highly rated yet affordable, I love this option!

  • Great for Walking and Trainning - This dog leash is a perfect balance between freedom and control, give enough freedom to your dog and everything absolutely under your control

3. Black Rhino Dog Leash

Black Rhino Dog Leash

I know I said that standard leashes weren’t great picks for Huskies, but this one is different.

Features & Pros

  • TWO handles instead of just one. According to the company, “One handle allows for the leash to fully extend to 6 Ft in length. The second handle can be used as a traffic lead and is 1 Ft from the clasp that attaches to your dogs collar.”
  • It’s like two leashes in one!
  • Multiple handles give you better control.
  • Great training leash, because you can use the short handle to teach your dog to walk nice beside you.
  • Comfortable high-tech neoprene handles (I’ll stop talking about the handles now).
  • Perfect for medium to large breeds, like Huskies.
  • Weather-resistant.
  • No-hassle money-back guarantee.

Testimonials

One top reviewer who does a lot of dog walking said that the handle was very comfortable and the leash was strong enough for his big boy.

Another said that it’s “affordable, yet tough!” and definitely made walking their dog a lot easier.

Everyone also raved about the little bonuses included, like the handy little bag for “poop bags.”

Cons

This is another leash with only 1% 1-star ratings out of 1,000+ reviews. The top complaints:

  • Reflective stripping isn’t the best.
  • Defective clip
  • Not chew-proof

Recommendation & Buying Advice

As far as standard leashes go, this is one of the very few that I’d recommend for a Husky.

That said, I feel like it’s best as a “back yard” leash, because it’s still a standard leash versus a heavy-duty model.

It’s great for training in an enclosed area, in other words, but I’m not sure I’d test it out on the “open road” for an untrained dog.

If you have a well-trained Husky with great recall, though, then go for it! The handles alone make it worth using!

Sale

Use the short leash for busy sidewalks, bike paths, and crowded areas that require close control of your dog. • COMFORT GRIP – Our handles are padded with a high tech grade A neoprene and give you complete comfort when walking your dog.

4. ladoogo 2 Pack 5 FT Heavy Duty Dog Leash

ladoogo 2 Pack 5 FT Heavy Duty Dog Leash

This one has over 8,000 ratings for a combined total of 4.5 stars.

It’s super affordable AND you get two leashes. Let’s take a look!

Features & Pros

  • Comfy ergonomic foam handle, no rope burns.
  • Comes with two leashes.
  • 5′ length is great for walks.
  • Made of strong 1/2-inch diameter rock climbing rope
  • 360o tangle free and rustproof swivel hook
  • Highly reflective threads intertwined throughout
  • 12 months hassle-free warranty
  • Very inexpensive.

Testimonials

One reviewer said  she loves the rope style for “hard pullers and powerful dogs.”

Another shared how the ergonomic handle is GREAT for arthritis, something that I deal with every day, too.

Others talked about how they were a great deal, and said not to let the low price scare you away.

Cons

With 1% of reviewers giving it one star, the most common complaints were:

  • Poor customer service and challenges actually using the “no hassle” warranty
  • Missing or defective pieces.
  • Dangerous for dogs that chew.

Recommendation & Buying Advice

Regarding the danger to dogs that chew, the leash does have a plastic piece that can easily get chomped off.

So, again, if your pup eats his leash, skip this one.

If you have a well-behaved dog and need something that’s super easy on your hands, though, this is a great pick.

ladoogo 2 Pack 5 FT Heavy Duty Dog Leash with Comfortable Padded Handle Reflective Dog leashes for Medium Large Dogs
  • FOAM HANDLE: no rope burns anymore, the Ladoogo dog leash inspired from fitness facility to added an ergonomic and comfortable foam handle that helps you maintain firm and comfortable grip without digging into your hands even when your dog pulls hardly
  • PERFECT LENGTH: 5 ft length dog leash is a perfect balance between freedom and control, it gives enough freedom for your dog but everything in your control
  • DURABILITY: Made of strong 1/2-inch diameter rock climbing rope and durable 360o tangle free and rustproof swivel hook that are stronger than other standard dog leashes
  • REFLECTIVE: Highly reflective threads keep high visibility at night for safety
  • 100% MONEYBACK GUARANTEE: All purchases are backed by a 12 months hassle-free warranty

5. Mighty Paw Chew-Proof Dog Leash

Last up, we have a sort-of chain-style leash, except it’s a lot nicer.

With 800+ reviews, it has a combined total of 4.6 stars.

Features & Pros

  • Chew-proof!
  • Made with steel braided cable.
  • Aviation aluminum carabiner clips handle up to 850 pounds of force.
  • Good for dogs of all sizes.
  • Ultra soft padded handle
  • Made in the USA
  • Can be used as a tie-out lead (but I don’t really like this idea).

Testimonials

Customers like how the lead is coated in soft plastic that won’t hurt a pup’s teeth.

Others love how it truly is chew-proof, and how it survives far better than other leashes they’ve tried.

Cons

The small handful of negative ratings mention two major cons:

  • Hard to hold during training because the plastic hurts your hands.
  • Defective clip doesn’t lock right.

Recommendation & Buying Advice

As with all of the the products, the “defective” con is just that- a con that only affects a small number of manufacturer defects.

The other con is more concerning. This isn’t a leash that you can hold onto unless you enjoy pain, to be blunt.

The plastic coating will chafe your hands like crazy. Trust me, I had a similar leash before.

While I loved mine for walking my two well-behaved girls, I never used it for actual training sessions.

However, the fact that it’s chew-proof is a major selling point.

Mighty Paw Chew Proof Dog Leash - Six Foot Metal Cable Lead, Non Chewable Braided Cord with Padded Handle. Chew Resistant, Great for Large Dogs and Teething Puppies (Orange)
  • Chew Proof and Durable - Our dog leash is made with a steel braided cable, so even heavy chewers and teething puppies can't break through. It will hold up to wear and tear, so your pup remains safe and secure in your grip.
  • Dual Function as Tie-Out - Use our chew resistant dog leash as a convenient tie-out option when in need.
  • Suitable for Any Dog Size - Our dog leashes are not only highly durable, but they feature sturdy hardware that hold tight, even with heavier dogs. Our rock-climbers, aviation aluminum carabiners can handle up to 850 lbs of force!
  • Comfortable to Use - Our dog leash boasts an ultra soft padded handle, so you can get a firm grip that is comfortable enough for even long walks. Your dog stays safely within your grip, and your hands remain cool and comfy.

Final Recommendation

Phew, we’ve finally reached the end, right?

That aforementioned arthritis is killing me, so I’ll bottom-line this for you really quickly.

Each of these leashes offers something unique, compared to the others, so there really isn’t a “top pick.”

However, if you said “you HAVE to buy one, and only one, or the world will end,” I’d go with the SparklyPets.

It’s cute AND durable!
